Sbu September Eyes Global Breakthrough as He Lands Top 20 Spot in Entrepreneur of Impact Competition

South African entrepreneur Sibusiso Ngwenya, widely known as Sbu September, is once again stepping onto a global stage, this time as a Top 20 finalist in the prestigious Entrepreneur of Impact Competition. The announcement marks a pivotal moment not only for his personal journey, but for the broader narrative of African entrepreneurship breaking into international markets.

As the founder of the iconic Skinny Sbu Socks, Sbu September has built a reputation rooted in bold ambition, resilience, and reinvention. Now, he is leveraging that same energy to compete for a prize that could accelerate his long-standing goal: cracking the United States market.

A Global Opportunity With Real Stakes

The competition, driven entirely by public voting, offers more than just recognition. The eventual winner will secure a feature in Entrepreneur Magazine, a one-on-one mentorship session with Daymond John—the founder of FUBU—and a $25,000 cash prize (approximately R400,000).

For Sbu September, this is more than a title,it’s a strategic gateway.

Speaking during a live interview on YOU FM’s Business Hour, he framed the competition as a crucial lever in his global expansion strategy.

We’ve been trying to penetrate the U.S. market for the past four years and have spent millions doing so. Winning this competition will fast track that whole process for me,” he explained.

From Tsakane to the World

Sbu September’s journey is one that continues to resonate across South Africa. From his early days in Tsakane to building one of the country’s most recognisable fashion brands, his trajectory reflects both the highs of rapid success and the realities of reinvention.

Now entering what he calls the “second coming” of his brand, his focus has sharpened toward:

  • Expanding product categories
  • Securing international retail footprints
  • Positioning African-owned brands as global competitors

His vision extends beyond commerce—it’s about shifting perception.

The world is waiting for us. The new age of global expansion is not with force, but with intellectual property and creative power,” he said.

The Power of Public Support

Unlike traditional business accolades, the Entrepreneur of Impact Competition is entirely community-driven. Public votes determine who advances through each stage, making grassroots mobilisation a decisive factor.

The competition unfolds across multiple elimination rounds, culminating in the final announcement on 25 June 2026. With each stage, the stakes rise, and so does the need for sustained support.

Sbu September’s campaign carries a deeper significance. It’s not just about scaling a brand, it’s about representing African innovation on a global platform.

I hereby ask all South Africans to rally behind me. This is bigger than me, it’s about showing what’s possible when African brands step onto the global stage,” he urged.

As voting continues, his journey stands as both a personal comeback narrative and a broader call to action, one that invites a nation, and a continent, to participate in rewriting the global business playbook.

Supporters can follow his journey and cast their votes via the official Entrepreneur of Impact platform.
