Pitso Mosimane Eyes Orlando Pirates Coach Vacancy

As Orlando Pirates prepare for the departure of head coach José Riveiro at the end of the 2024/25 season, speculation is mounting about his successor. Among the names circulating, Pitso Mosimane, one of Africa’s most decorated coaches, has emerged as a potential candidate.

Mosimane’s Credentials and Fit for Pirates

Pitso Mosimane’s name has surfaced as a potential candidate to succeed Riveiro. Known for his tactical acumen and ability to rebuild teams, Mosimane has previously managed SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns, where he secured five league titles and led the team to a CAF Champions League victory in 2016. His subsequent stints with Al Ahly and Al Ahli further solidified his reputation as one of Africa’s top coaches.

Mosimane’s familiarity with South African football dynamics and his success in both domestic and continental competitions make him a compelling option for Pirates. His emphasis on rebuilding teams and fostering a winning culture aligns with the club’s aspirations to challenge Sundowns’ dominance .

Mosimane, who boasts an impressive résumé with multiple league titles and three CAF Champions League victories, has been without a club since leaving Iran’s Esteghlal FC in January 2025 due to a pay dispute. Currently, he is focusing on his Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools (PMSS) project in South Africa. When questioned about the Pirates’ coaching vacancy, Mosimane stated, “I’ve seen it [speculation], but nobody has spoken to me…we will see.” He added, “Why not? It must be for the right project. It must be at the right time”

As Orlando Pirates navigate the uncertainty surrounding José Riveiro’s future, the prospect of appointing Pitso Mosimane presents both opportunities and challenges. While financial considerations are paramount, Mosimane’s proven success and alignment with the club’s objectives make him a strong candidate to lead Pirates into a new era of success. The coming months will be pivotal in determining whether this potential partnership materializes, shaping the future trajectory of one of South Africa’s most storied football clubs.
