Mamelodi Sundowns were denied a second CAF champions league star by Pyramids FC after almost 10 years since they got the first one. On form DRC-born striker, Fiston Mayele, opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through what can only be described as a superb volley on the right side of the box. Masandawana, who came into this cup final on the backdrop of a Betway Premiership trophy win, started the game like a house on fire.

Lucas Ribeiro’s left footed shot in the 1st minute of the match was too high but clearly demonstrated the team’s commitment to win. Ahmed Samy found the back of the net for Pyramids when he netted the second goal of the game in the 56th minute with a beautiful header from close range after a set piece situation. But it when it looked like all was lost, Sundowns pulled one back through Rayners in the 75th minute. Masandawana continued pushing for the equalizer, somewhat dominating in the final third and pressing. With e referee adding 10 minutes injury time to VAR delays, it looked like Downs was going to make a come back.
This is Pyramids FC’s first CAF Champions League in their history. The win comes as a much needed consolation after the Egyptian giants missed on the league, coming second to Al Ahly.
