Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly sensation Percy Tau has recently emerged as one of the most intriguing free agents on the South African football scene. Here’s a full breakdown of the buzz surrounding his potential move—and what it could mean for Kaizer Chiefs.
In a revealing interview with Robert Marawa on 94.7 FM, Tau dropped a clear hint: he would be open to signing a two-year deal with Chiefs for around R450,000 per month, a figure that he described as “reasonable” and realistic within the Premier Soccer League landscape
He emphasised that he isn’t setting unreasonable demands:
“I am very reasonable when it comes to contract dealings … I’m not going to ask for something I know a club is not going to offer me.”

Former Chiefs winger Junior Khanye weighed in: he believes Tau still has quality but is no longer the explosive threat he once was. He warned that expecting him to lead the line, especially at Chiefs or Pirates, could backfire.
“He can’t go to either Chiefs or Pirates… who will he bench there? … If Khama struggled, how is Percy going to do everything for Chiefs?”
Khanye argues that Tau may find a more suitable environment at Sundowns, where pathways beyond playing—such as coaching or ambassadorship—could be available.
Percy Tau’s potential return to the PSL is shaping up to be a defining storyline this winter. Chiefs face a pivotal decision: invest in his proven talent—or stay firm on their plans to build a younger attacking core.
Whatever happens, one thing is clear: when the transfer window closes, Percy Tau’s next destination will tell us a lot about how South African football values pedigree versus freshness.
