Rulani Mokwena, the rising South African coaching star, has been appointed head coach of Algerian powerhouse MC Alger on a two-year deal, with the club aiming to fortify its status in domestic and continental competitions.
Mokwena had multiple offers—including from Egypt’s Pyramids, Zamalek, and Gulf-region clubs—but ultimately chose MC Alger. Why? It aligns perfectly with his CAF Champions League ambitions. As reigning Algerian champions and continental regulars, they offered the competitive stage he was seeking.

At 38, his coaching résumé is impressive:
- Four league titles and the inaugural African Football League win with Mamelodi Sundowns
- Head coach roles at Wydad Casablanca and briefly Mamelodi Sundowns
- A reputation for attacking, structured football, often utilizing a modern 3‑4‑3 setup.
His blend of innovation and discipline earned praise both in Morocco and South Africa, marking him as a top-tier African coach.
With MC Alger aiming to defend the domestic title and push deeper into the CAF Champions League, Mokwena’s task is clear: win now, while building for the future. His proven ability to deliver titles and cultivate attacking flair makes him a perfect fit.
Interestingly, Mokwena isn’t the only South African-linked coach in Algeria. He’s set to rekindle his rivalry with Sead Ramović, the former TS Galaxy coach now at CR Belouizdad, and could face off with Josef Zinnbauer (ex-Orlando Pirates) who manages JS Kabylie.
The Algerian top flight is about to get a lot more exciting—with South African flair injected into the coaching battleground.
Rulani Mokwena’s appointment at MC Alger isn’t just another career move—it’s a statement of intent. At a historic club riding high, he has the tools and ambition to make waves. As he takes the reins in Algiers, the spotlight shines bright: will he win Algerian hearts and continental glory?
