Orlando Pirates coach, Jose Riviero, has announced that he will leave the Soweto Giants at the end of the season.
The shock exit was made public a few days ago and fans have been wondering who will take over from him?
Riviero, who joined the Bucs in 2022, has had a relatively successful stint as the Sea Robbers’ boss, having won three MTN 8 cups, two Nedbank cups and successfully guided the team to greater heights in the CAF tournament. Pirates is now in the semi finals of the CAF champions league.
When he took over, the buccaneers had just come back from a horrible season in 2021. The Spanish mentor, who was initially doubted, with some calling him ‘The Plumber’, has managed to take the team back to ‘Happy People’ days in the three years that he has been in charge.
Now that he is on his way out, the question on everyone’s mind is who will succeed him? A few names have been thrown around. Apparently the likes of Mabhuti khenyeza, Molefi Ntseki and Dan Malesela are some of the local coaches who have already raised their hands and submitted their CVs with the goal of taking over from Riviero.
Whatever the outcome in terms of succession, Riviero will always be remembered as the guy who came in amidst great hopelessness and fed naysayers humble pie. He went from being a plumber to a cup specialist in under three years
