Wonder Fest Soars as Over 4,000 Fans Celebrate Historic Festival on the Runway at Wonderboom National Airport

A new cultural landmark has officially landed in Tshwane. Over the weekend, the inaugural Wonder Fest made a powerful debut, drawing more than 4,000 festival-goers to the runway of Wonderboom National Airport for a vibrant day-to-night celebration of music, fashion, food and lifestyle.

Held on Saturday, 7 March 2026, the event transformed the airport’s tarmac into a high-energy cultural playground under the theme “The Flight Experience, Not Flying, But Elevating Culture.” The concept reimagined the aviation setting as a space where creativity could take off, bringing together live performances, curated food experiences, the popular Wonder Market and immersive lifestyle moments that celebrated the spirit of Tshwane’s creative community.

Beyond the music and festivities, the festival also carried deeper significance for the historic venue. During the celebrations, Tlangi Mogale addressed the crowd and officially marked the launch of the airport’s 90-year legacy celebration, highlighting the role Wonderboom National Airport has played in the city’s development for nearly a century.

In her remarks, Mogale acknowledged the collective effort behind the festival’s success, thanking airport management, organisers, emergency services, law enforcement and community partners who worked together to bring the event to life. She described the festival as a powerful example of how public infrastructure can evolve into a dynamic cultural platform while continuing to support local traders and attract visitors to the city.

Mogale also emphasised the municipality’s broader vision for the airport as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth. As the largest general aviation airport in South Africa by traffic volume, Wonderboom has long served as a hub for airshows, trade exhibitions, aviation training programmes and international competitions — activities that continue to draw visitors and investment to Tshwane.

Musically, the festival delivered a powerhouse lineup of some of the country’s most celebrated performers. Crowd favourites such as DJ Maphorisa, Sun-El Musician, Mörda, Vigro Deep and Ms Cosmo kept the runway buzzing with energy, alongside performances from Transmicsoul, Silly Bean and Kyotic DJ. The festival was seamlessly guided by charismatic hosts Mpumi Landan and Mfana Gogo, who kept the momentum high throughout the day.

One of the most unforgettable moments arrived when Lekompo star Shandesh made a dramatic helicopter entrance, landing directly at the airport while her hit single Chopper blasted through the speakers. The cinematic arrival drew roaring cheers from the crowd and perfectly embodied the festival’s aviation-inspired theme.

Throughout the day, festival-goers immersed themselves in a dynamic mix of live music, fashion expression, street-style culture and curated culinary experiences. Local traders and vendors also benefited from the strong turnout, reinforcing Wonder Fest’s vision of creating a space where community participation and creative entrepreneurship can thrive side by side.

The inaugural event was supported by several major lifestyle partners, including Courvoisier, Flying Fish, Graham Beck, Vuse, Gordon’s Gin, Johnnie Walker and Red Bull, whose involvement helped bring the immersive festival concept to life.

With its striking location, strong turnout and memorable performances, Wonder Fest has already positioned itself as a bold new cultural moment for Tshwane. By merging aviation heritage with contemporary music, food and fashion culture, the festival signals an exciting new chapter for Wonderboom National Airport, one where history, creativity and community continue to intersect.

As the city commemorates 90 years of the airport’s legacy, the successful launch of Wonder Fest suggests that the runway will remain more than just a place for aircraft departures and arrivals. It has now also become a platform where culture can take flight.
