Xabi Alonso, former Real Madrid midfielder and current manager of Bayer Leverkusen, is poised to return to the Santiago Bernabéu, this time as the club’s head coach. According to multiple reports, including from Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Alonso has informed Bayer Leverkusen that he will depart at the end of the current season. His expected appointment comes as a successor to Carlo Ancelotti, who is rumored to be in talks with the Brazilian national team.
A Triumphant Tenure at Bayer Leverkusen
Alonso’s managerial career took off at Bayer Leverkusen, where he assumed the role in 2022. In the 2023/24 season, he led the club to an unprecedented treble: winning the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and the DFL-Supercup. His tactical acumen and leadership earned him the Globe Soccer Best Coach of the Year award for 2024 .
Leverkusen’s Response to Madrid’s Interest
Bayer Leverkusen’s CEO, Fernando Carro, confirmed that the club has a “gentlemen’s agreement” with Alonso. This understanding stipulates that if any of Alonso’s former clubs—such as Real Madrid—express interest in hiring him, Leverkusen would engage in discussions without obstructing the move.
Anticipated Changes at Real Madrid
The potential hiring of Alonso aligns with Real Madrid’s broader strategy to rejuvenate the squad. Reports suggest that Alonso may bring along key staff members, including Sebas Parrilla and Alberto Encinas, to his new role . Additionally, Alonso is reportedly interested in integrating players like Nico Paz and Rodri into the team, indicating a focus on youth development and squad depth .
Real Madrid are hoping to win the FIFA Club World Cup as they are expected to be making a lot of changes in their squad and back room team.
