As 2024 unfolds, ZULO emerges from a brief hiatus, teaming up with burgeoning rapper Flow Jones Jr. for their latest single, “JOL.” Following the success of ZULO’s infectious “Adawise,” anticipation among fans has been soaring, and this pop-edged trap anthem does not disappoint.
In “JOL,” the duo delves into the challenges faced by artists in the music industry, from chasing payments for bookings to dealing with unscrupulous promoters. Flow Jones Jr. skillfully weaves in an interpolation of Msaki’s “Ulwandle Lutshile,” adding depth to the narrative. ZULO takes the lead, expressing his reluctance to linger at parties longer than necessary, a sentiment echoed by many navigating the music scene.
Produced by ZULO himself, “JOL” features a trap beat adorned with a spiraling synth and trumpet accents, reminiscent of Outkast’s iconic “SpottieOttieDopaliscious.” A surprise log drum during the chorus amplifies the pair’s impassioned plea for their rightfully earned dues. The song’s closure treats listeners to a harmonious guitar solo, punctuating the overall sonic experience.
ZULO explains, “If I was going to do a song for the streets, I wanted it to be a little unconventional for what we’re used to. I wanted to put something in there that feels very 2000s hip-hop, something amapiano, while still keeping it current and making sure it sounds like home.”
Released alongside a compelling music video, “JOL” marks the beginning of a promising year for ZULO. As he continues to shape the future of contemporary South African hip-hop, this collaboration with Flow Jones Jr. serves as a powerful declaration – it’s time for artists to secure their place and demand what’s rightfully theirs in the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry.
