Award-winning Pretoria-based rapper 25K returns with his highly anticipated sophomore album, Loyal to the Plug: The Life & Times of Don Kilograms. As a trailblazer of Pretoria’s unique rap sound, 25K has crafted a distinctive style that has not only influenced the local hip-hop scene but also carved out a unique identity for Pretoria rap in South Africa. Known for his breakout hit, Culture Vulture, which highlighted his lyrical prowess and put the ‘sePitori’ dialect on the map, 25K continues to elevate Pretoria’s influence in the South African music landscape. Following the success of his debut album, Pheli Makaveli, which earned critical acclaim and multiple accolades, Loyal to the Plug further solidifies his evolution as an artist and his commitment to his roots.
In this album, 25K delves into themes of loyalty, brotherhood, growth, and love, while encouraging listeners to recognize their potential. With Loyal to the Plug, he not only showcases his artistic maturity but also highlights the power of genuine connections and loyalty, a cornerstone in his life and career.
The Journey Behind the Album
The album title, Loyal to the Plug, is reflective of 25K’s journey in both life and music. “Loyal to the Plug speaks about my experience as a hustler,” he explains. “I’ve always been loyal to the plug I had at the time, and because of that loyalty, I’ve progressed as a hustler. Loyalty is more than a word; it’s a lifestyle. I’ve built relationships in this industry and formed real connections outside of music, leading to organic collaborations. This album is inspired by the Mafia and Pretoria’s underground scene, which has its own street hierarchy”. This theme is integral to The Life & Times of Don Kilograms, as it offers an intimate view of 25K’s life post-Pheli Makaveli, marked by an evolved sound and deeper lyrical insight. “What I speak about on this album is not what I spoke about four years ago. The growth and maturity in the sound are distinct,” he adds.
To mark the release, 25K hosted an exclusive listening session on the Sony Music Rooftop, where fans and industry peers enjoyed a track-by-track breakdown of the album.
Breaking Down Key Tracks from “Loyal to the Plug”
The album opens with a thought-provoking intro featuring renowned actor Warren Masemola. “Warren begins the album with a lesson on life during and after apartheid,” 25K explains. “My verse dives into my life post-Pheli Makaveli. I start with ‘They think I fell off, ke hit ya di last,’ a callback to when I began Pheli Makaveli with ‘juice yaka e bottomless,’ signifying my unending drive. It’s a musical narrative where I tell my story alongside Warren.”
In Fake Love, 25K collaborates with long-time friend and artist Focalistic. “Foca and I have known each other since 2016, and our bond goes beyond music,” he shares. “This track addresses the challenges of coming from the hood and being cautious about who’s in your circle. Some people aren’t always rooting for you. It’s important to discern who truly supports you, as their influence can shape your journey. And above all, knowing that God’s presence is greater than anyone who wishes you harm.”
“This is one of my favorite tracks,” 25K reveals. Initially intended as a solo, the track evolved into a powerful collaboration. “When I played it for Maglera, he immediately resonated with the theme. Then, I sent it to A-Reece, who delivered his verse with the vulnerability and candor he’s known for. This track is a tribute to Motswako royalty—artists like Khuli Chana and Cassper paved the way for us. This song holds a special place for me.”
Inspired by the film The Untouchables, this track symbolises the unbreakable bonds within Pretoria’s hip-hop scene. “Working with Flow Jones Jr is always refreshing. His unique sound brings something new to the genre,” 25K shares. “Loatinover and I have built something deeper than music. We’re pioneering a sound and making a lasting cultural impact. Everyone on this track is untouchable in their own right.”
Legacy and Impact
Known as “The Don,” 25K has made significant contributions to Pretoria’s rap scene. His influence, marked by resilience and dedication, resonates throughout Loyal to the Plug: The Life & Times of Don Kilograms. With this album, 25K continues to lead and inspire, presenting a compelling story of perseverance and loyalty. Loyal to the Plug is now available for streaming on all major platforms.
