With the release of her deeply emotive debut album Inganono, rising Afropop singer-songwriter Miona solidifies herself as one of South Africa’s most promising new voices. The 10-track offering is a raw, intimate diary of love, pain, healing, and cultural pride, wrapped in warm melodies and poignant lyrics.
Fresh off the buzz of her heartfelt single Isthembu, which features KwaZulu-Natal’s vocal powerhouse Siya Ntuli, Miona builds on that momentum with a full-length project that dares to be vulnerable while celebrating African musical heritage. Inganono is a sonic tapestry that marries traditional Zulu influences with contemporary Afropop and maskandi textures, a nod to icons like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, yet firmly rooted in the now.
“This body of work is everything to me,” Miona reveals. “It’s stitched together from my own scars and dreams. These songs are personal, but I know I’m not alone in what I’ve lived through.”
What elevates this debut is not just the stunning soundscape but the emotional honesty that Miona brings to every verse. Tracks like the title song Inganono confront the darker shades of romance, jealousy, disloyalty, and emotional turbulence. Meanwhile, Ukiss offers an opposing but complementary tenderness, a soft, loving embrace that reminds listeners why love remains worth chasing.
“It was important for me to show both sides of love,” she says. “We’re dealing with so much in our relationships today, I wanted to hold up a mirror, but also light a candle.”
Beyond her soul-stirring solo work, Inganono features contributions from revered artists like Bab’Ntokozo Zungu, Musiholiq, and Zyamqhuksa. These features don’t just add prestige, they deepen the album’s resonance, weaving in different shades of vocal and lyrical storytelling that feel uniquely South African yet globally relatable.
The response from listeners has been immediate and passionate. Fans have flooded social media with stories of how the album has touched them, especially the brutal honesty of Inganono and the romantic ache of Ukiss. It’s a testament to Miona’s rare ability to articulate the things people often feel but struggle to express.
But Miona isn’t stopping here…
With her sights set beyond local airwaves, she hopes to unite with artists across the continent, build an international fanbase, and ultimately use her platform to uplift others. “I want my voice to reach the world, not just to entertain, but to heal, empower, and connect,” she affirms.
